Supplements & Diet

There is no one diet for children that have hirschsprungs disease.  The diet that we have been following has consisted of your regular ol’ healthy foods.  Here is a list of things that we have found to be good and bad.

The good list…

  • Lot’s of water
  • Brown rice
  • Lentil beans
  • Broccoli, cauliflower, string beans
  • Healthy fiber cereal
  • Almond milk, oat milk
  • Pulverized nuts (nut meal)
  • Whole wheat bread
  • Avocado
  • Yogurt, keifer
  • Most fruits

The bad list…

  • Grapes (skins)
  • Raisins
  • Walnuts (or any nuts whole)
  • High Fructose Syrup (we call it liquid satan)
  • white rice
  • Bagels

While this is not a definitive list for all HD people, it’s what we have been living by.

Any suggestions on foods to avoid when doing irrigations to minimize clogging of the tube!!

Good question, that is pretty individual. For us certain fruits veggies dont digest completly so they were problematic. I could always see the carrots coming through BUT then it would help me to say “OK last nights carrots or coming through, so we are doing good!!!!!!!!!!”. The skins from beans caused problem, chunks of mango…there were so many things. Another thing that is trial and error; keep a log so you know what to avoid when you are in a pattern of irrigating. It was so hard and frustrating when that tube would clog and you have to pull it out to un clog- it always sent me over the edge 🙁 Also we always performed “surgery to the tube” to make the holes as big as possible- that helped a little. good luck!
