At ten years old we are in such a good place. Joey is a healthy, active 4th grader. He has regular bowel movements on his own, without the aid of med’s or irrigations. That being said we still follow a strict regimen of healthy, clean, high fiber eating. He is on very high dose of probiotic (VSL or KLAIRE LABS) and Saccharomyces boulardii – a healthy yeast.
Saccharomyces boulardii is most commonly used for treating and preventing diarrhea, including infectious types such as rotaviral diarrhea in children, diarrhea caused by gastrointestinal (GI) take-over (overgrowth) by “bad” bacteria in adults, traveler’s diarrhea, and diarrhea associated with tube feedings. It is also used to prevent and treat diarrhea caused by the use of antibiotics.
We also make sure he is hydrated each and every day, paying more attention on very active or very warm days. The only food we do not allow him to eat is popcorn. We tried corn on the cob last summer and he did fine w/ a 1/2 of cob. All the other foods which were problematic years ago have slowly been re-introduced to see if they better agree with his digestive system. For us keeping that food/poop log was essential until he was 5-6 years old. Time and growth have helped tremendously. For those new to this HD journey know that ‘this too shall pass’. It gets easier/better with time. Always thinking of all the HD warriors and their families. Happy Holidays.
